About Me

Joined 7 Field Sqn Re in August 1964 .I had a number starting with 2400 and it caused great delight to everyone to ask me my number when I started 2400 everyone burst out laughing,it took me a few weeks to realise that i was the first 24 on the unit. I served in Osnabruck firstly as a combat engineer before transfering to MT. On the Squadrons move to Ripon i eventually became the MT Cpl of 2 Troop and retained that job throughout that tour and on the move back to Hohne. I moved then to HQ troop again as MT Cpl . I served my first tour in NI during my last year and left the Sqn in 1975. 7 Field Sqn for me will always be my best Squadron, possibly due to it being my first ,but the move to Ripon as an independant Sqn was the best times, giving team spirit i never felt again in any unit i served in afterwards.

About Me

I took the Queens shilling at Glasgow recruiting office and reported to 1 Training Regiment on 27th January 1964.

My first posting was to shiny 7 in July that year and went to Achmer on mine laying exercise the next day. I was put in the tender care of Fud Fotherigham. He got me through that week and I soon realised that he and the other slighty scary characters, Chris, Brummie, Chunky etc. were really quite human (sort of). I think I settled in quite quickly with the help of John G, Spud, Donny Nielsen Andy EC and a few others. I didn't realise it at the time but they were to become some of the best friends I would ever make and were responsible for my 3 years in Osnabruck remaining as one of the best periods of my life.

About Me

I joined 7 in June 1964 after a year at JTR Rhyl and 4 months at Training Regt. I was put into 3 Troop due to Jerry Heap finding out that I liked a drink, or 5. I spent the summer learning the ropes and then was put inot MT and trained as Ferret driver to take over from John Gilliland.,had a great autumn doing that. I spent until early 66 doing that role during which time I had been all over Germany on ecercises and into Denmark and Norway in 65. In 66 I went on detachment with the 2 Div Air Troop, which was great fun and gave me a taste of what life could be like as part of an independant role organisation. I was RTU when 7 returned to UK, by which time I was a B1/RSI and took over as pronto for 1 Troop and worked on training programmes in the Sigs Wing. This was a big change after Air Troop and I was never happy, especially with some aspects of life in the Sqn. After months of trying to get a posting I gave up and PVR'd. I spent some great times with 7 and met some great people who influence the major parts of my character and life. I realised that life was not about me, it was about those about me. I re-enlisted in 72 and had a differnent career, and finally left the mob in 81. Since then I worked for number of year in a range of jobs related to sales and marketing, ran own businesses, not very well, retired at 52. WOndered what to do next and went to college to get some quals to prove I could, got a degree in ancient history and archaeology and have been teaching since then. Work harder now than ever. Married to Maggie, second one, got loads of kids and grandkids and love them all to bits. Ambition: To wake up every morning and realise I'm still breathing.
